Continuing Education Units – CEUs
Who needs CEUs……and How to earn CEUs
If you are certified with AICI (FLC, CIP, or CIM), you need to earn 2.4 CEUs every three years in order to maintain your certification. You may contact AICI HQ to get a copy of your current CEU Report. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the required 2.4 CEUs when your certification is due for renewal. Please note: If you are not yet certified with AICI, you are not required to earn CEUs.
Effective November 1st, 2007, AICI will not award CEUs to any programs that do not meet the criteria listed below. CEUs will not be awarded after the fact for programs not already CEU-approved.
AICI provides the following opportunities for its members to earn CEUs:
- Concurrents and Workshops at the AICI Annual Conference
- AICI Chapter Education Days that have been approved for CEUs
- Programs/Trainings approved by AICI to offer CEUs – For a current list of programs CEU'd by AICI, click here. It is your responsibility to ensure the program you are taking has been CEUd. Upcoming Programs are also listed in Connections.
To earn CEUs through programs not offered through AICI:
- Programs must already be CEU-approved. This includes:
- Academic courses taken at a recognized Community College or University (provided they are not being taken as part of a degree program)
- CEU-approved courses offered by private companies, such as Fred Pryor Seminars or National Seminars Training. An internet search will reveal numerous CEU-approved courses.
- Program content must be relevant to a category listed in the AICI Core Curriculum (www.aici.org/education/core_curriculum.htm)
- You must complete a Pre-Approval Application (www.aici.org/education/documents/GuidelinesandPre-ApprovalApplicationforIndividualstoreceiveCEUs.pdf)
- Submit the Pre-Approval Application to the CEU Chair for approval six (6) weeks prior to taking the program. CEUs will not be awarded for any courses that have not been pre-approved by the CEU Chair.
If you are a trainer who would like to have your program pre-approved to offer CEUs, please see AICI's Application and Guidelines for Obtaining Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Delivering High Quality Education Opportunities.
Please contact the VP Education/CEU Chair for any questions regarding CEUs.

 How Can I Earn CEUs at the Annual Conference?
If you attend the Annual Conference, you will be awarded CEUs based on your participation. Because one contact hour = .1 CEU, you may be awarded between 1 and 2 CEUs based on your participation in educational workshops and events (not for the entertainment portions of the conference). CEUs are predetermined for each workshop. In order for your course attendance to be recorded, you must earn a minimum of .6 CEU during the conference.
To receive CEUs for a workshop or concurrent, you must submit the Speaker Evaluation Form and the Learning Outcomes Form prior to leaving that concurrent session or workshop. In addition, you must submit your CEU Verification Form prior to leaving the convention site. No CEUs will be awarded if these forms are not turned in at the proper time.
 Are there Other Ways that I Can Earn CEUs?
CEUs can be earned in a number of different ways. For example:
- AICI chapters and regions often have their educational events pre-approved for CEUs;
- Academic courses taken for credit at an accredited college or university are automatically approved for CEUs;
- Academic courses taken at a community college are automatically approved for CEUs;
- Some companies provide CEU-approved courses, including the American Management Association, Career Track, Fred Pryor Seminars, National Seminars, and Skillpath;
- There are private companies, trainers, self-study programs, and internships that have been pre-approved by AICI to offer CEUs. Click here for a current listing of CEU Presenters that have pre-approved programs.
Am I Limited in the Types of Courses I Can Take for CEUs? To receive CEUs through AICI, the program content must fall into a category listed in AICI’s Core Curriculum. Click here to review the AICI Core Curriculum. You can only receive CEUs for a program once. Repeating the program does not entitle you to additional CEUs.

Can I Earn CEUs for an Internship?
One CEU is awarded for each 40 hours spent in an internship. If the internship is taken under the sanction of a college or university and is eligible for academic credit, these guidelines do not apply. Instead, refer to the guidelines for academic courses.
Guidelines and information for internship programs are available upon request from the CEU Committee.

Can I Earn CEUs for Academic Programs?
Academic courses taken for credit, by correspondence, or audited under the sanction of a three- or four-year regionally accredited college, university, or community college are automatically approved for CEUs if the academic coursework falls under the AICI Core Curriculum. A passing grade must be earned in courses taken for credit. An official transcript or grade report is required for documentation. You may not earn CEUs for courses taken as part of a degree program.

What CEU-Related Records Should I Keep?
Keep documentation that verifies all CEUs. Documentation should prove your participation in the course, as well as the subject matter of the course. A participation record can consist of a transcript, a grade report, a certificate of completion, an attendance record, or the written verification from the course’s sponsor or presenter. Subject matter verification can be a course syllabus or a course outline that includes the length of the program.
As proof of attendance at Workshops and Concurrents at the AICI Annual Conference, be sure to keep your copy of the CEU Verification Form (which is a summary of all the sessions you attended and the CEUs earned).
 What Records does AICI Keep?
AICI permanently maintains all CEU records. A CEU report is released at least once a year to all members. You can request your CEU status at any time.
All records are private and confidential. Only the VP Education and CEU Chair (for purposes of ensuring Professional or Master Certification status) may request a copy of your CEU record. |
